Kinetic: A powerhouse in technological innovation

Like mechanical and quartz, Kinetic is a platform. Over the past 20 years, SEIKO has created on this platform a suite of Kinetic movements, each bringing unique features to the consumer.

It was at the 1986 Basel Fair that SEIKO unveiled its first Kinetic prototype. Introduced under the trial name of 'AGM', it was the first watch in the world to convert kinetic movement into electrical energy. It was the first step in a development that, 20 years later, has made Kinetic synonymous with environmental friendliness, high performance and long-lasting convenience to a generation of users worldwide. From the launch in 1988 of the first commercially available watch (then under the new name AGS) until today, over eight million Kinetic watches have been sold (as of 2007).

In 1998, Kinetic Auto Relay was released, extending the 'at-rest' operating period of the watch to a remarkable 4 years. 1999 saw the launch of the Ultimate Kinetic Chronograph, a masterpiece which fused the very best of SEIKO's mechanical and electronic watch making skills, and in 2003 another Kinetic Chronograph was launched. At Baselworld 2005, the Kinetic Perpetual made its first appearance, combining Kinetic convenience and longevity with a perpetual calendar, correct to the year 2100. In 2007, SEIKO's emotional technology Kinetic Direct Drive is introduced.

Well-made if not well-designed
This is my 2nd Seiko watch in my lifetime, the first was a digital/analog combo with a gold-color band and sparkly face plate which i bought when I was 18 with my Christmas gift money. It lasted for approximately 15 years or so, until it suddenly gave up the ghost for some unknown reason - though the sapphire crystal still looked as good as new - amazing! The SNP007 is a weighty, well-made watch with all the latest technology. That being said, the 24-hour dial is totally useless as there are no lines, dots, markings that denote the hours of 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11, 13, 15, 17, 19, 21 and 23! Since the hand within that tiny dial moves incrementally with the big hour hand, you never know precisely if it is one of the unmarked hours or an increment of the marked hours. For example, since there are absolutely NO markings for 13:00, is it 12:55 or 13:00? You'll never know the precise corresponding 24hr clock time - big drawback! Some Seiko fans have said that it really serves as an AM/PM device, to which i must reply, " Is that really a burning need for most sober people? " Also dealers have said that you can look at the hands of the big dial to tell you the minutes, but if one has to do that why bother with a 24-hr. dial? Seiko should have utilized the space for a day-of-the-week dial or my-next-meal-is-breakfast/lunch/dinner dial, something useful! Of course, the leap year window is really of no practical use unless you are type who ponders universal questions like " does a cat actually move its tail in a counter-clockwise, elliptical orbit when it flatulates?" As for the kinetic drive, you do have to wear it often to take advantage of the recharge feature; otherwise, it will not perform optimally. Being a pianist, playing the Chopin Op. 25 #4 etude four to five times a day is enough (if you wear your watch on your left hand), but alas it is hard on the wrists and arms. All taken together, I feel that the SNP007 is a solid watch that will give you something to talk to your techie friends about for years to come.


Wonderful watch
I keep going back to this watch to wear. I think my favorite feature is that I pick it up after not wearing it for months and it takes itself the correct time and date and starts ticking, I don't have to do a thing. Compare that to a Tag Hauer that I keep having to put batteries in and you'll get the idea!


Luxury watch but no luxury price
I purchased the watch and am quite pleased with it. It is solidly made and comfortable to wear. The accuracy is the usual dead-on Seiko quality. The only reason that I didn't give it five stars is the fact that it doesn't have a "day of the week" indicator. Otherwise, it is worth every penny.


A very good watch
If you are looking for a practical watch, not a "status" one, this is the one. The new generation Kinetic will keep the watch running for many years. The pertetual feature will keep accurate calandar date for 100 years. The quality of this watch, comparing to my other watches from Omega and Tag Heuer, is identical. You should be very happy about this watch.
